The CES Canada/Kenya Leadership Scholarship seeks to recognize and support the highest achievers in the CES secondary school scholarship program who have completed the KCSE national exams and have been accepted for study in a public Kenyan university. Recipients must obtain an overall A plain or A- or B+ grade.

Seven (7) full university scholarships have been awarded over a four-year period 2014-18 to CES graduates who have demonstrated financial need and have shown significant leadership potential. An additional seven (7) students each received a four-year scholarship beginning in 2018. The objective is to establish a strong desire in each selected scholar to make a difference in their community and thereby become part of a new generation of nation builders. A proven academic history of success at the highest level and a demonstrated commitment to volunteerism and community development are key components in identifying scholars.

The value of each scholarship is 120,000 KSh. Scholarships are renewable on an annual basis over a period of four years. Scholars are required to maintain high standards of academic achievement over the duration of their university studies.

Students must complete an application process that includes a written and a personal interview. Once selected, scholars are required to attend and participate in a small group CES Kenya Leadership Seminar. At the end of each term students are required to complete a written report on what they have learned and what they hope to accomplish in the upcoming term. Students will also participate in an on-line Leadership Training Program. At the end of each year scholars will meet for a debriefing session and participate in further leadership studies.

Leadership studies have been jointly developed by CES Canada and CES Kenya. Topics include interpersonal skill development, character building and goal setting designed to promote independent learning and proactive problem solving. Through the setting of realistic and attainable goals, scholars will be able to measure and further develop their career and academic potential and aspire to a brighter future.

CES Canada/Kenya Leadership Scholarships are provided through the Peter Cundill Foundation. The Foundation supports projects in education with an emphasis on promoting the health, education and wellbeing of young people.

Message from the Principal of CESCED

Patricia Nyanchama Makori, BA, MBA, MHR

“You ran a good race and you finished strong in the KCSE. Congratulations! But life is not just one race, it is a marathon. Now you are in another race. Your success will be judged on how well you finish and how much “sweat equity” you put into it. That means real hard work is coming your way, you cannot escape it. Leaders embrace it, they survive on it.

There are as many leadership styles as there are leaders. No two people operate the same way or think the same. We are all uniquely created and different. What is common to all is that we are bound by our humanity and as equals we respect and affirm each other. In addition, we all possess God given talents and skills that with time, resources and encouragement can be developed. This leadership study program will challenge you to dig deep, to learn, to achieve, and to present yourself as a leader, capable of making positive contributions in your place of living and work.” PNM 2020

PROGRAM:

The CES Kenya on-line Leadership Training Program has been designed to meet the needs of CES Kenya graduate students who are pursuing higher learning at college or university. The intent is to assist our students to be leaders, capable of managing their world from a position of compassionate leadership. To compete on a global level, our students require stronger skills in the area of communications, entrepreneurship, problem solving and team building. It is of particular importance that they see themselves as leaders, young people who will have influence and create change.

The on-line Leadership Training Program has ten modules of study. The emphasis is on practical application of concepts where students begin a personal analysis of their leadership abilities. Evaluation and feedback is essential and students are given opportunity to excel by re-writing and improving their submissions. The course runs simultaneous with university studies and is designed to take one year to complete. There are also reading materials interspersed that focus on emotional well being and personal health. A series of articles in three categories entitled Authentic Leadership, Healthy Living, and Building Connections are designed to support students in their lifestyle and accomplishing their goals.
