Mama Truphena Nyangweso Mayenga Learning Resource Centre

Three Generations - Three Partnerships

The story begins in the mid-60’s, just after Kenya’s Independence. Families were settling in the formerly white settlement lands surrounding Kisii-Nyamira counties, western Kenya.  Despite many hardships, a courageous group of women played the leading role to set-up new homes from scratch and raise their families in these new settlement schemes. Some had never attended school, but they knew the importance of education and made sure their children had the opportunity to learn. Many schools were established as a result.

Now three generations later, this project celebrates those mothers, among them Mama Truphena Nyangweso Mayenga. The learning centre is located on the beautiful hill of Itumbe Primary and Secondary Schools, Nyamira County KENYA, overlooking the Rift Valley to the east. A groundbreaking ceremony event took place October 31, 2022. In attendance were CES Kenya Patron Malik Khaemba, along with CES Canada Directors Michael Frederiksen and Charles Mayenga.  The entire school community, community leaders and local media were present to kick off the project.

To date $15,000 Cdn has been raised. The foundation is in place, framework and walls are next with community fundraisers planned in June 2023. Locals are also contributing bricks and mortar, lumber and roofing materials. The centre will include meeting rooms, a library, community centre and an IT computer facility, at a cost of circa $100,000Cdn.

CES Canada in partnership with CES Kenya, the Itumbe Schools and community at large, and the Mayenga Family, are working to complete this project by October, 2024.

You are invited to share in this project. CES Canada will accept funds and a tax-deductible receipt will be issued. 100 percent of your donation will be used to help build the Learning Centre.

It is said that a mother is the most important woman in everyone's life – definitely, the first and best teacher of any child. While this project will go a long way to provide a learning resource and a facility for community interactions and events, it will also serve to highlight the achievements of parents, especially mothers who ensured their children were well fed, cared for and supported in their education.
