Water, Nutrition and CES Canada

CES Water Initiatives

Since 2010 CES Canada has created sources of clean water in 8 secondary schools. Hand-washing with soap stations have been built at 3 additional CES schools, where up to 16 students can wash at the same time. In August 2019, the St Caroli Lwanga Lutaso SS solar-powered water project was officially opened. Five schools and an entire village of 4,000 now have access to clean treated water. This was a joint project between Water Mission, the Poul Due Jensen Foundation (DK) and CES Canada/Kenya.

The CES Kenya Alumni are actively engaged, visiting CES associated schools, teaching students the correct way of washing their hands. They also provide education programs on personal health and hygiene.

Currently there are no plans to create additional sources of clean drinking water.

CES Nutrition Initiatives

CES Canada has established 3 working farms at Bishop Sulumeti Girls HS, Sister Mary Goretti Girls HS Shikoti, and Navakholo SS. Dairy cows and goats at each school ensure a milk supply for the school community. Shikoti school has a poultry barn while Sulumeti has its pig farm. Each school grows Napier grass for the animals and a variety of vegetables such as sukuma(spinach), potatoes, yams, maize, onions, carrots and cabbage. Students studying Agriculture work the farms as part of their practical education.

CES ensures that each student has a tea break twice daily as well as a hot meal at lunch. For boarders, there is the added two meals of the day provided.

Currently, there are no plans to create additional livestock or market gardening projects. The daily feeding program continues for all secondary students.
