Remembering Ibrahim Efumbi, Treasurer, CES Kenya

By Malik Khaemba, HSC, Patron/CEO, CES Kenya

Mr. Ibrahim Mauko Efumbi was a founding member of CES Kenya, way back in 2004, during its formative years. At that time, I was still serving at the Kenya High Commission in Ottawa and was searching for professionals in the field of education and who had similar thinking and aspirations. The late Efumbi to me was an immediate choice because he was a friend and an educator. He readily took up the challenge and he never looked back up to and until his death.

MUNGU AMUBARIKI (editor: which is Swahili for “God Bless”).

Contributions within CES Kenya

Ibrahim was a significant contributor within CES:

  • Founder member of CES-Kenya in 2004.

  • Treasurer of CES-Kenya -- his function among others involved processing and payment of students’ tuition fees and upkeep expenses

  • Mentorship Program: Ibrahim mentored students, particularly those who had qualified to proceed to universities and colleges for further education.

  • Student Discipline: having been a school principal himself, he played a key role in setting standards and instilling discipline in students

  • School Visitation Program: he was a key participant in the school visitation program which involved visiting all the schools and providing guidance and counselling to students

  • Leadership Program: he played a key role in CES leadership program.

Other community roles

Ibrahim worked closely with his community. He was described by his family as an enthusiast who loved to work with the members of his community to better their livelihood. More specifically, the late Efumbi was involved in the following activities:

  • Board Chairman of Buhayi Muslim Secondary school close  to his home.

  • Vice Chairman and Patron clan known as AVAUMA of which he was very proud of.

  • Deputy Principal and Principal of various schools in Navakholo sub-County until his retirement

  • Chief Examiner of mathematics with Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Eduction (KCSE, awarded after having completed requirements for graduation).

A tribute to a brother and a friend

The late Ibrahim was a man of inspiration. He inspired many and was very professional in handling his duties. Those of us who knew and were close to Ibrahim are unable to come in terms of the reality of his death. Ibrahim was passionate and flexible in dealing with people. He provided a great support system to both the family and the community. He provided the tenets of education to all that he came across in pursuit of excellence i in everything that he was doing. He was a good example of a gentleman per excellence. Fare thee well Ibrahim.
