Gammaliel Kanenje: from humble beginnings
I am a graduate of Murang'a University of Technology, holding a Bachelor's degree in Education Science, but my journey started long before that in a small, humble family. The dream of higher education once seemed distant, but one opportunity changed everything—CES chose to sponsor me. This act of generosity transformed my life, enabling me to work hard, achieve my academic goals, and embark on a path I once thought was impossible.
The High School Journey: A Dream Unfolds
Coming from a background where education was a luxury, CES became my lifeline. During my high school years, CES not only covered my fees but also provided holistic support, offering training in computer literacy, leadership, and management. These experiences became the building blocks of my future. Motivated by the support, I worked hard to excel academically, determined to make a difference for myself, my family, and my community.
Gammaliel Kanenje used CES support to build a career in teaching Mathematics and Physics, helping build the next generation of Kenyan skilled workers.
Stepping into University Life:
After high school, I gained admission to Murang’a University of Technology. Though CES only partially sponsored my university education, their earlier support fueled my determination. I faced many challenges at university, but I knew that hard work would open doors to a brighter future.
Leadership and Activism on Campus
University life was more than academics for me—it was about leadership and making an impact. Elected as a class representative and later a student council leader, I learned the importance of listening, advocating for others, and driving change. I also became an environmental and mental health activist, leading sustainability initiatives and raising awareness about mental well-being. Participating in forums on innovation and leadership further sharpened my skills and broadened my network.
Graduating and Continuing Leadership
In 2023, I graduated, but my leadership journey continued. I was elected as the Student Program Coordinator for the alumni association of Murang’a University of Technology. In this role, I mentor younger students, helping them navigate the same challenges I once faced.
Giving Back with CES Alumni
Giving back is central to my life. I continue to work with CES Kenya alumni on projects aimed at mentoring school students, leading environmental conservation efforts, and connecting young graduates to job opportunities. Together, we strive to uplift others and make a lasting impact.
Currently, I work as a teacher, inspiring the next generation. However, I aspire to pursue a master’s degree abroad, building on the foundation CES helped me establish. I remain committed to pushing boundaries, both for myself and the students I mentor.
None of this would have been possible without CES. Their sponsorship and belief in me shaped my journey. My story is one of perseverance, leadership, and giving back—and it is only just beginning.
I deeply believe that leadership is not just about personal success but about lifting others and serving with a heart rooted in the people. The support CES provided me shaped not only my education but also my passion for mentorship and community service, and it’s been an honour to pass that on to the youth in Kenya.
Currently, I am teaching Mathematics and Physics under the Board of Management at Gatundu High School, a secondary school in the Mount Kenya region, where I also teach computer literacy lessons. This is a skill I honed through the training I received from CES, and it’s been rewarding to equip students with knowledge that goes beyond the classroom.
I’m also proud to have been elected as the Student Program Coordinator in the alumni association at Murang’a University of Technology. This position allows me to work closely with alumni and current students, helping to foster growth through mentorship and community engagement.
Additionally, I am part of the alumni executive team at my former secondary school. Whenever we visit, we motivate students by sharing our experiences and encouraging them to dream big. These moments are especially meaningful to me, as they allow me to give back to a place that played such a significant role in shaping who I am today.
